Fun Things to Do in Seattle
- The Space Needle was constructed for the 1962 World's Fair. The Space Needle is one of the most popular attractions in Seattle and serves as a beacon for the city. The innovative structure stands more than 600 feet tall. Visitors can travel to the observation deck located at 520 feet for panoramic views of the Seattle skyline and a revolving restaurant that features Northwestern cuisine. The Space Needle hosts numerous events throughout the year, including a New Year's Eve fireworks celebration.
- Dating back to the 1880s, the Woodland Park Zoo, located on more than 90 acres, offers the opportunity to visit more than 1,000 animals of almost 300 species. Animals from around the globe can be found at the zoo, including a Komodo dragon, zebras and African elephants. The zoo contains numerous endangered species, and guests can stroll through the botanical collection, which houses countless trees, shrubs and herbs. Visitors won't want to miss the nationally recognized Woodland Park Rose Garden, which contains more than 100 varieties of roses.
- The Museum of Flight is dedicated to aviation history and houses more than 19,000 artifacts. Permanent exhibits include the original presidential jet, Air Force One, and one of the fastest jetliners in the world, the Concorde. In the Great Gallery, a six-story structure that contains numerous vintage planes, visitors can try their hand at dog fighting, hang gliding or landing on the moon using flight simulators. One of the newest displays, an interactive exhibit called the Birth of Aviation, provides information about the history of flight dating back to the days of Orville and Wilbur Wright.
- A popular tourist attraction, Pike Place Market offers nine acres of shops, restaurants and galleries along Seattle's waterfront. The market dates back to the early 1900s and is one of the oldest public farmers markets in the nation. Each year 10 million visitors flock to the market. One of the most popular places to stop is the Pike Place Fish Market, where employees throw giant fish to each other. One of the first Starbucks Coffee stores is located at Pike Place Market. The area is also known for the variety of street entertainers who can be found performing year-round.
- America's pastime can be enjoyed at Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners. The stadium, known for its retractable roof, opened at cost of more than $500 million in 1999, replacing the Kingdome. Safeco Field holds more than 45,000 fans and offers luxury suites and numerous food and beverage choices. A Mariners Hall of Fame offers the opportunity to learn more about some of the greatest players in franchise history. Tours of the stadium are also available allowing visitors a behind-the-scenes look at dugouts, press boxes and the playing field.
