Iowa Smoking Law
- The Iowa Smokefree Air Act was passed by the Iowa legislature in 2008 and signed into law the same year. This act banned smoking in most businesses and public places, and became the preemptive law regarding smoking in the state.
- Smoking is banned in public places, all businesses enclosed in a building, bars, restaurants, school grounds, outdoor seating to restaurants and public land of any kind. In almost every type of public building or state land smoking is prohibited in Iowa.
- The most notable exceptions to these smoking laws are casinos, private clubs without employees, farm tractors and trucks, and the Iowa Veterans Home. There are also provisions that allow for private smoking rooms in long-term care facilities.
- The law requires nonsmoking signs to be posted in all places where smoking is not allowed. The signs are required to state the name of the law in addition to the warning of fines or penalties.
- Hotels in Iowa are allowed a limited number of smoking rooms, which is capped at 20 percent. Smoking in a hotel is only allowed in those rooms and no place else.
