Have You Had Chantix Side Effects?

101 213
Each year more and more medications are developed in an effort to help alleviate a variety of symptoms for patients, as well as help to improve the overall quality of life for many different people.  Even though these medications are meant to help, unfortunately, there are times when they work in quite the opposite way.  Patients are then forced with a decision as to whether they should continue to take a medication to help with a particular issue, and endure a variety of other side effects, or simply cope with the original issue so as not to suffer complications.

One medication that showed great promise was a drug called Chantix.  This medication was designed to meet a very common need:  to help individuals stop smoking cigarettes.  It is quite well known the dangers of cigarette smoking, as well as how difficult it can be to break this habit.  Developing a drug that could actually help people conquer the cravings and kick the addiction in a fairly short period of time seemed like a dream come true for many.

As is the case with all drugs entering the market, Chantix underwent mandated testing to ensure safety.  That being said, it was only after a number of people began using the drug on a regular basis, as directed, that severe physical injuries, and even death began to be reported.  Today, this drug has been linked to an increased risk of behavior that can only be explained as unusual, an increase in suicide attempts and contemplation, heart attacks, and various other serious health issues.

So, just how did Chantix come to be, how exactly did the problems come to light, and what can be done by those who have been negatively impacted by the drug?

Chantix is the brand name for varenicline tartrate and was introduced to help people cope with the side effects of withdrawal from nicotine during smoking cessation.  The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug for sale in May of 2006, and it has quickly become a drug that is quite popular amongst those trying to give up cigarettes for good.

As is the case with all medications introduced to the market, the manufacturer hoped it would become a best seller; however it was not long at all before serious issues began to crop up, at rates that were quite startling.  Since the time of its approval, Chantix has been linked to some of the most severe side effects in history, according to the Adverse Event reporting system of the FDA.

The drug has been designed to have the main ingredient work within the brain, which has caused a number of side effects of a psychological nature.  It has been found that the manufacturer did not properly research these potential issues, and did not provide an adequate warning to the public.

By the year 2009, the FDA grew so concerned about the issues, that it required the manufacturer to place a warning label on each package of Chantix.  This label was to inform the public as to the potential increased risk of abnormal behavior, suicidal thoughts, and suicidal actions.  However, even with this warning, a number of problems still led to serious injuries and deaths, and therefore many lawsuits have been filed by patients or on behalf of patients.

In June of 2011, the Food and Drug Administration took further action to now require the manufacturer to place warnings regarding an increased risk of various heart problems and heart attacks associated with Chantix.  Even though the manufacturer did have information that suggested this risk prior to 2011, the company did not spend the time needed to research this issue further, or warn the public or medical field as to the problems.

If you or someone you know has been harmed by taking the drug Chantix; such as suffered an injury because of abnormal behavior that was sudden, had a heart attack, experienced any other type of heart problem, developed Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis or Stevens Johnson Syndrome, or attempted or committed suicide, experienced skin reactions, or suffered an injury or death because of a blackout, sudden changes, visual disturbances, a fall, an accident, or a seizure; it is important that you are aware you may be able to seek compensation through a lawsuit.

There are a large number of cases involving injuries and deaths related to the drug Chantix currently being reviewed in court systems all across the United States.  Personal injury attorneys are working hard to help those who have been affected gain compensation for the harm that has been done to them, in an effort to hold the manufacturer accountable.

Many individual cases, as well as class action suits are pending due to the manufacturer's failure to provide an adequate warning to consumers taking the medication, as well as their failure to properly investigate the issues that have been associated with the drug.  The manufacturer's lack of response seems to be indicative of self protection, and placing profits before people.  This has come at the serious expense of consumer health, which is most disturbing since these individuals were trying to improve their health by quitting smoking.

If you or someone you know has suffered because of using the drug Chantix, you should not delay in contacting a personal injury attorney as soon as possible.  These claims often involve complicated issues and are not the type of claim that should be filed without professional assistance.  Most personal injury attorneys will review your case details free of charge, and with no obligation to pay until the time your claim settles.

A personal injury attorney will handle every last detail of your case, and will see it through the court system from start to finish.  He or she will work hard on your behalf to hold the manufacturer accountable for the damage that has been done.  While a personal injury attorney cannot undo the harm you have suffered, he or she can help you to receive the justice you deserve.
