Cayman Islands Holidays - Cookery Lessons

103 13
If you are visiting the Cayman Islands for your holiday this year, you will probably be aware of the outstanding diving and snorkelling opportunities around the coast line of all three of the Islands.
But what if you don't like getting your hair wet? Providing that your stay takes in the second Wednesday of the month, you could learn how to cook traditional Cayman food by attending a cookery lesson provided by the National Trust of the Cayman Islands.
Without an indigenous population, most of the traditional Cayman food is influenced by African and British meals.
These have been given a local flavour by the abundance of locally caught seafood.
This is to help preserve one of the traditions of the Cayman Islands, which is in danger of dying out due to the increase of convenience foods and restrictions on fishing.
Also even though there are over 150 restaurants in the Cayman Islands, most of the food is based on other cultures, such as French, Italian, Indian and Japanese, with an assortment of American fast food as well.
This means that traditional Cayman food has become harder to find when dining out.
These classes, which are held at the National Trust Office, have hands on instruction from veterans of 'Old Caymanian Cooking'.
This includes local farmers, small producers, local chef, a bakery shop owner and grandmothers.
Strict marine regulations, which are there to protect the reserves of sea life, have meant that it is harder to get ingredients for traditional meals such as conch, whelks, sea turtles and Caribbean spiny lobsters.
The national dish of sea turtle can now only be purchased from farmed stock.
