Candle Making Project For the DIY Candle Maker - How to Make Grunge Candles

103 35
Grungy candles are an easy and fast DIY candle to add to your home decor.
All it takes is 15 minutes from having a pillar in your hand to the finished project and it is cheap to boot.
You can find the materials right in your kitchen, garden and craft area.
You don't need to be a candle maker to make and enjoy your own grungy candle.
Here is a little lesson on why primitive and grungy go hand-n-hand.
The word grungy is a slang term for soiled, dingy, grimy and grubby.
It is used to describe dirty conditions or characteristics of fashion.
Grungy is associated with primitive decor because of its simple, rustic looking style.
Primitive means original, characteristic of an early stage of development, and self-taught artist.
When you make grungy candles do you think of the early stage of development of candle making and natural elements? I think of a simpler time that uses a lot of creativity to decorate the home.
When I create grungy candles I think of candles with a down to earth, homey touch.
Materials Needed:
  1. Candle wax or an already made pillar candle
  2. Pillar silicone mold - if you don't have a pillar candle
  3. Modge Podge
  4. Spices, herbs, grated lemon or orange peel
  5. Fragrance Oil According to the spice used- if you are making your own candle
  6. Paint brush
  7. Wax paper
  8. Wick
  9. Wick pin
Directions: *Note - These directions take you from making your own pillar candle
  • Melt the wax and pour it into a silicone pillar mold
  • Take the wick pin and place it into the center of the mold
  • Secure the wick pin with 2 tightly bound bamboo skewers
  • Take the pillar out of the mold, take the wick pin out of the center of the pillar and insert the wick into the hole
  • Place the wax paper on a cookie tray
  • Add or mix spices on the wax paper
  • Take the modge podge, dip the paint brush into it and paint a strip down one side of the pillar candle
  • Roll or sprinkle the spices on that strip of modge podge
  • Then paint another strip down the candle and add or roll spices on that strip
  • Continue with the above method until the pillar is completely covered with spices
  • Seal the spices to the candle by either applying more modge podge or spraying the pillar with a matte finish sealer
  • Let the pillar candle dry for 48 hours
If you have any left over wax, melt the wax and drizzle it over the candle.
It will give a nice wax dripped look to the sides.
Warning - this is not a candle to burn.
If you decide to sell these grunge candles or give them away make sure you place on these candles with a "no burn" warning label.
Add some dried apples and oranges, rosehips and dried herbs to a wooden bowl.
Set your new grungy, primitive candle inside.
Voila! Instant primitive decor for your home.
