Film and TV Production Companies and the Film Production Process

105 24
Film and TV production companies as well as TV commercials production companies look after the entire process involved with making movies, TV serials, TV commercials, documentary films, corporate films, etc. The essence of the process of film production, in simple terms, can be divided into pre-production, production and post-production. New age media companies also undertake film production for social media and other digital media in a similar way.

The following are the steps usually involved in the pre-production process of entertainment production companies:

€Creating the Script: A Script Writer usually first creates the script for a film or documentary. As regards advertising films, this may already be done by a Copywriter at the client ad-agency. Most often, the script goes back-and-forth many times with the production heads, before it is finalised. Then, a Screen Writer adapts the script for production, finally making it ready for shooting.

€Creating Lyrics and Music: A Lyricist writes songs for the film, often along with other score or music writers. Entertainment production companies usually have close ties with Lyricists and Musicians.

€Casting: Once the script is screen-ready, the Casting Director of the film and TV production company takes on the role of casting for each character of the TV serial, film, or commercial. Actors are approached, and deals are signed with them.

€Budgeting: Production houses must ensure that film, TV commercial, etc, is produced within budget, doing their best to ensure minimal or zero production overruns. This can be done by outsourcing functions to reliable people who will stick to their word with regard to pricing, and with a thorough and realistic schedule plan, among other things.

€Choosing Directors, Lyricists, Musical Arrangers, Film Editors, and other professionals: Most film and TV production companies have their own film making professionals in all the required areas. Some of these roles may be outsourced to independent professionals.

€Readying the Sets and Locations for Shooting: Sets are usually then chosen and designed. Locations are chosen for each shoot. Locations are booked according to their availability and that of actors - especially those making special appearances. Technical equipment must also be booked. This may include equipment for sound, camera, lighting, etc.

€Costume Designing and Fitting: Costumes must be designed for each scene, and they must be fitted to the actors.

€Sets Creation: The sets are then created according to the planned design.

The following are the steps usually involved in the production process:

€Make-up: Make-up artists work in co-ordination with the lighting and camera people, to see that the actors all look perfect under the lighting conditions for each shoot. If the scene goes into the next day's shoot, the make-up artists have to ensure that the make-up on each actor looks exactly the same on screen.

€Directing and Shooting of Scenes: Some production houses have their own film directors, while many outsource the job to a professional who suits the job at hand. The director is responsible for the scenes coming out exactly as planned. He / she guides the actors along the way, helping them make alterations to the delivery of their lines and to their expressions, to their comic timing, etc, with numerable retakes. The shooting of the scenes may not be in sequential order of their appearance in the film - they are usually done according to the director's plan.

€Photography Planning and Execution: The cinematography of a film has a huge bearing on the outcome of the individual scenes and the film as a whole.

The following are the steps usually involved in the post-production process of entertainment production companies:
€Dubbing: The dubbing for films is often done separately at a voice and dubbing studio.

€Music Arranging, Sound and Film Editing: The film editors work throughout the process of shooting, so scenes can be reshot on-the-spot. Final editing is done after the shooting is complete. This includes sound effects and editing.

Film production usually happens in these sequential steps - Whether it is a film or TV serial being shot by a film and TV production company, a social media video being shot by a new age media company, a TV commercial being produced by a TV commercials production company or an entertainment production company.
