Shaping a Neckline in Knitting
- 1). Follow the knit instructions according to the pattern chosen. When it is time to bind off for the neck, cast off the stitches loosely. Avoid making a tight ending row, or your hole will be too small to fit over your head.
- 2). Place the last stitches to be worked on a stitch holder. This allows for extra stretch and give in the neck when adding the neck band. Pick up the stitches and finish knitting the desired neck band, according to the chosen pattern.
- 3). Shape a V-neck by making the neck edge stitches as loose as possible. The stitches made on the diagonal for this shape should be longer, to accommodate the angle. Knitting with a tight or regular tension can cramp the shape of the neck.
- 4). Stabilize a square or a slit neck. These types of necklines tend to dip in the center-front or back, and the wider the neck, the more this is likely to happen. Add more stability to this shape by casting off the required number of stitches on the horizontal row. Do not place the stitches on a holder.
