How to Install a Squared Electrical Panel

104 9
    • 1). Decide whether you want the Square D panel flush mounted or surface mounted. Flush mounted means that the door of the panel sits flush with the wall. To flush mount the panel, simply mount it between two wall studs. Surface mounting the panel enables you to mount it on concrete or brick.

    • 2). Mount the panel. There are mounting holes inside the electrical panel's shell. Drive the screws included with the panel through these holes and into the wood or masonry.

    • 3). Locate the four service-entrance wires coming into the house from the electric pole. Two of the wires are black, one is green, and one is white. Route the four wires through the top or bottom of the Square D box, whichever is more convenient.

    • 4). Take the two black wires that you routed into the Square D box and route them to the main breaker located at the top of the Square D box.

    • 5). Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the two black wires, then install them into the main circuit breaker's two connection points. Make sure they go in all the way, then tighten the screws to hold them in place.

    • 6). Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the white and green wires. Install the white wire and the green wire into the neutral bar (the bar with several holes running down the side of the Square D panel shell). Each wire goes in a separate hole. Tighten the screws holding each wire in place.

    • 7). Your panel installation is complete. Now you should call a licensed electrician to run the wires through your home.
