The Message In Fairy Tales
Fairy Tales are neither real nor believable but they touch young readers at a very real level. It seems to impart on them something magical that the young mind is ready to accept. Most children take fairy tales as truth and get so engrossed in its story, its characters and its meanings.
Fairy tales were never intended for children though. If any astute parents read the story and took a moment to understand it they would understand that the story, sometimes is totally inappropriate for kids. However, there are some significant variations to the story and the adult content and adult imagery has been prudently edited out.
Some of these fairy tales are more than a thousand years old and initially were stories that were told between adults and caries within the story line, very real negative aspects of human thought. There is evidence of sexism and racism as well. There is a tremendous propensity to view the role of women ans subservient and the role of men is elevated to that of savior and hero.
Fairy tales do not have the innocent veneer it has today. That is just the spin that major publishers and movie makers put on it to target the audience. The fairy tale movies industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, ranging from the movie, its sequels and prequels and now, its merchandise, DVDs and every imaginable item a child could want.
It's a hypnotic audience that are the real decision makers in the family unit. It is the best marketing target audience that has ever been known. Children are easily entertained and when given stories that capture the mind and provide vivid color and beautiful music. Its an instant hit. The all want the movie, want the DVD and want the comforter with the hero on it.
Teaching stories to kids that carry within it destructive ideas from the past is not the best ways to handle it. They are great stories for adults, yes. They need to be preserved and cherished as milestone markers of our civilization. But it should not be used to force feed children with images of such bazaar circumstances. What comes out of teaching a kid that rabbits can talk and wolves hunt little girls. If you want to see the effect of that, look at the wolf population that was brought to the brink of extinction when these kids grew up that wolves are evil.
