Video: How to Kill Weeds Around Raspberries
Video Transcript
Hi, I¡¯m Farm to Table Chef Teca Thompson, at TecaThompson.com. And today, we¡¯re talking about how to kill weeds around raspberries. So, because raspberries like so much water, so do weeds, and there¡¯s going to be a constant process of trying to keep the weeds down around your raspberry plants. So, first and foremost, you want to remove all the weeds, and this will probably be something you¡¯re going to have to do weekly, but it¡¯s worth it because raspberries are delicious and you just don¡¯t want them to have to share their nutrients or water with pesky weeds. So, we¡¯ll give them a good hearty weeding, making sure you get all the roots, but not disturbing the raspberry roots. And then, we¡¯ll just throw them away. So, the next thing you¡¯re going to want to do is mulch, but since raspberries shoot off such a lot of new growth and it comes from underground, you¡¯re going to want to use a really light mulch ¨C like, something heavy like a bark mulch is just not going to cut it because you¡¯re going to suppress the new growth and possibly damage the plant. So, today I¡¯m just going to choose a mulch that I¡¯ve collected around my neighborhood, and I¡¯m going to use pine needles from a pine tree. And, I¡¯m just going to do a thin layer around the plant and it¡¯s going to help suppress the weeds that want to come up. So, I¡¯ve got my mulch out. I¡¯m going to give it thin spread all around the berry plant. And, this will deter weeds, but the strong shoots of the raspberry are going to still be able to pop through them. And, this is going to help kill weeds around your raspberry plant. I¡¯m Farm to Table Chef Teca Thompson, at TecaThompson.com. Thank you for watching.
