Cloth Diapers Ergo-iffic Families Can Afford

101 22
Your baby is crying "Change me, change me" you think "I should make a change, with the struggling economy and the green awareness coming to the forefront, a change is definitely needed".

Making a choice

Between cloth and disposable. For a long time families have been living on automatic, thinking they don't have a choice. When baby arrives, the hospital sends you home with your first packages of disposable diapers. Getting you addicted to the convenience of the "plastic poop portals". Humans have been plastic junkies for half a century now and its literally choking the planet. Cloth is making a big comeback for many reasons, not just the environment, for baby's health and the family's financial sake.

Environment

There are 20 billion diapers in our landfills each year! The decomposition of these plastics and chemicals won't be breaking down any time soon, projected time is in the next 500 years. It takes 3.4 million gallons of oil and 200,00 trees to make disposable diapers for one year, that's just for Americans (according to The Good Human).

Health

Disposable diapers have been known to cause rashes from the perfume and chemical allergies babies have to them. The super absorbent gel is made from sodium polyacrylate which is linked to childhood asthma and low sperm count in boys. Dioxin is also used in the bleaching process, which contaminates not only the environment, it is known to cause toxic shock syndrome in humans. Changing your baby frequently will reduce the risk rashes. Infrequent changes can lead to staph infections or yeast growth, that is from any soiled diaper left on too long, cloth or disposable.

The expense

Disposable diapers will cost a family with one baby, anywhere from $50.00 to $80.00 a month. A cloth diaper service runs about the same per month and they do all the dirty work, sterilizing and washing up to thirteen times before delivering to your home. Buying your own cloth diapers will be less expensive, costing you about $25-50 dollars a month, depending on the sanitation process you use. This process is a little more work for mommie. The waste from the cloth diaper goes into the sewer or septic system, so there is no chance of contamination of ground water from chemical pollutants or feces. Many washings of the diapers will raise your water and electric bills, not to mention the laundry soap. Still coming out ahead saving money.

Whether you choose cloth or plastic your baby is the most important reason you decide. There are times when traveling, visiting or daycare when parents or caregivers will need to use the disposable diapers for convenience. These facts are provided to help you make an educated decision for your family. Be it for saving money, health reasons, the environment or all of these reasons. Keeping baby happy and healthy is the main goal and if families can save money and help the environment, that's a win-win situation. Happy changing's!
