How to Stake a Rivet Chain

    • 1). Prop the dirt bike up on a center stand. Lift the rear wheel up so it can rotate freely.

    • 2). Locate the master link on the chain. The master link is the link that has two removable rivets. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to pull out the two rivets and remove the master link from the chain. Once the rivets are removed, the master link slides off the chain links.

    • 3). Connect the new chain to the old chain with the master chain link. Use the pliers to insert the rivets into the master link connecting the new and old chain. Pull the old chain off the sprocket wheels, with the new chain following and going onto the sprocket wheels.

    • 4). Remove the master link from the old-and-new chain connection, leaving the new chain in place. Connect the two ends of the new chain with a new master link. Use the needle-nose pliers to insert the rivets and secure the master link in the new chain. The master link hooks the chain at both ends, and the rivets close the link connecting the chain.

    • 5). Stake the rivet chain by installing a screw-type master link plate and clip. Make sure the clip is on the side of the master link in the direction the chain moves in. If the chain moves to the left, insert the clip on the left side of the link. Use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the plate together to stake the chain.

    • 6). Remove the dirt bike from the center stand.
