Household Floor-Wax Substitute
- Borax cleans linseed linoleum and vinyl floors. The Earth Easy website recommends using borax sparingly on linoleum floors. Pour 1 gallon of warm water into a bucket and add 1/4 cup borax, 1 cup vinegar and several drops of baby oil. Mop the floor with either a string or sponge mop. The baby oil will polish the floor and leave it with a shiny finish.
- Lemon oil is a floor-wax substitute for varnished wood floors. Combine several drops of lemon oil with 1/2 cup warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on a microfiber mop to first clean the floor. Then use a dry cotton cloth, such as an old baby diaper, to polish the floor.
- Clean and polish unvarnished wood with a mixture of equal parts olive oil and lemon juice combined in a spray bottle. Spray on a clean cotton cloth and wipe the floor. Distribute the olive oil evenly for a shiny surface.
- Mop your linoleum floors with 1/2 cup white vinegar in 1 gallon of water. Then, rinse by mopping with 1 gallon of water and 1/2 cup skim milk. The skim milk will polish the floor to a shine.
- After washing your linoleum floors, bring them to a shine with club soda. Do not mix the club soda with water. Pour it directly on your mop or a clean rag.
- You can mop painted wood floors with washing soda. Add 1 tsp. washing soda to 1 gallon hot water. Washing soda removes dirt from the paint, allowing its natural luster to shine.
- Polish your wood floors using vegetable oil. Mix equal amounts of vinegar and vegetable oil in a bucket. Wax the floors by rubbing a small amount of the solution into the wood with a soft cotton rag, buffing until it shines.
