Ideas to Create Lighting in Home

104 123

    Look for Lamps

    • Add quick lighting to your home with table top lamps or torchieres, torch lamps with tall stands that you can situate in room corners. Since bases are available in popular wood finishes, glass, metal, wicker and ceramics, shop for lamps and shades that complement your room decor. Ensure the lamp you choose accommodates the type of bulb you desire. Some torchieres, for example, feature dimmer switches and use halogen bulbs instead of energy saving compact fluorescent lightbulbs.

    Hang Chandeliers

    • Illuminate foyers, dining rooms and hallways with chandeliers that provide decorative lighting with an eye-catching touch. From formal crystal designs to domed art deco styles to informal versions with colorful fabric shades, chandeliers can become the focal point of your room. When installing a chandelier above a dining room table, for example, Sylvania recommends keeping the bottom of the fixture at least 30 inches above the table to generate the proper task lighting.

    Install Sconces

    • Hang sconces to add accent lighting to rooms without extra space for table top fixtures or the ceiling height for chandeliers. Whether they're art deco, contemporary or classic, sconces add an artistic look along a hallway, beside a piece of artwork or in powder rooms, for example. Unless you want electrical cording trailing from the sconce to the outlet, however, you'll need to cut holes in walls and run electrical cable to wire sconces from the inside.

    Use Vanity Strips

    • Keep bathroom areas well-lighted by installing vanity strip lighting above sinks and mirrors. Featuring shiny chrome, brushed nickel or brass to coordinate with bathroom fixtures, vanity lights provide adequate front lighting for applying makeup or shaving, for example. Look for strips with a line of round bulbs or a row of lamps with glass shades that you can mount face up or down.

    Save Space With Recessed Lighting

    • Offering a clean look that makes your room appear more spacious, recessed lighting is also the most labor intensive. Because you must inset fixtures in the ceiling itself, you or an electrician will need to wire the lights and cut holes in the ceiling to accommodate each light can. Install recessed lights to illuminate an entire room, create ambiance with a dimmer setting or throw spotlights on specific pieces of furniture or art.

    Try Track Lighting

    • Called track lighting because of the metal tracks that connect and power the adjustable lights inserted into it, these fixtures allow you to direct concentrated task lighting or place a highlight on a piece of artwork, for example. Once you've installed lighting tracks with internal wiring, you can add or remove individual lamps to adjust the amount of lighting the fixture provides.
