Fernandina Beach, a Victorian seaport village, is on Amelia Island in northeastern Florida on the Atlantic Ocean. While many Florida beaches are off limits to dogs, Amelia Island beaches, with their white sand and dunes, welcome leashed dogs year round. According to dogfriendly.com, this includes the two-mile long Fernandina City Beach, located at the northern end of Amelia Island. Dogs are also allowed on Amelia River Cruises and the Cumberland Ferry, from which passengers enjoy views of Amelia Island, varied marine and bird life, wilderness beaches, salt marshes and the Fernandina waterfront. - Sidewalk cafes welcome dogs at Fernandina Beachstreet cafe image by jsw from Fotolia.com
Days Inn Amelia Island, one block from Fernandina Beach, offers amenities such as an Olympic-size swimming pool, hot tub, tennis and volleyball courts, hair salon, on-site restaurant and lounge. All rooms have free local phone calls, free high-speed wireless Internet, cable TV, work areas with desk, microwaves and refrigerators. Suites have complete kitchens.
Dogs of all sizes are allowed for a nightly pet fee of $25 (as of spring 2010). When making a reservation, let the motel know you are traveling with a pet. The nearby beach is dog friendly as long as dogs are leashed, and the hotel has large grassy areas where guests can walk their dogs. Pets must be cleaned up after and never left alone in the room.
A walk in the Historic District of Fernandina Beach allows visitors to explore many quaint shops and Victorian buildings, as well as spending time at the docks, watching the fishing fleets or having lunch at one of the sidewalk cafes where pets are welcome.
