A/C Central Air Troubleshooting

    • 1). Check your thermostat's settings if the vents are not blowing cold air. Make sure the system switch is set to "Cool." Set the temperature lower than the indoor temperature displayed on your thermostat's screen. If you see a low battery warning on your programmable thermostat's screen, remove the old batteries and insert new ones.

    • 2). Move the fan switch on your thermostat from "Auto" to "On" to see if the blower is working. If the blower runs, but the condenser on the outdoor unit does not, check the circuit breakers inside the electrical panel next to your outdoor condensing unit. If the circuit breakers are off, turn them on. If they are already on, turn them off and then turn them back on to reset them.

    • 3). Check the outdoor condensing unit if it is not turning on. If your unit has a high-pressure cut-out button near the refrigerant lines sticking out of the cabinet, push it as far as it will go to reset it.

    • 4). Touch the larger of the two copper lines exiting the condenser if your air conditioner is still not turning on. If it is warm, your system may be out of freon and will require professional recharging. Inspect the line. If it is frozen, remove the screws on your condensing unit and remove the cover panel. Remove the air filter from its compartment and inspect it. If it is dirty, brush off any dirt and debris. If the filter is damaged, purchase a replacement filter from an appliance or hardware store and replace the damaged one. If your unit is still frozen, shut it off completely to see if it will thaw. Contact a qualified HVAC technician if your unit is still frozen.

    • 5). Check to see if your pump is plugged in and working if your unit is in the basement and has a condensate pump. Inspect the safety switch on the pump and make sure it is on.

    • 6). Clear any dirt and debris around the outdoor condensing unit to improve airflow.
