Creating a Table Of Contents Using Adobe InDesign2
Adobe InDesign2 can create a table of contents for a single document or multiple associated documents that will be printed together.
If you plan to create a TOC for a single document, insert a blank page at the beginning of the document.
If you plan to create a TOC for a book, create a new document, add the new document to the book file, and open the book file.
Choose Layout > Table of Contents.
Choose a custom TOC style that you've created previously, or select the default TOC style.
The Default TOC style will include the styles marked for inclusion in the TOC.
If you want to modify the settings, you may do so using the Table of Contents dialogue box.
You may override any of the default TOC settings.
When you are satisfied with your changes, click OK.
The Loaded Text icon will appear.
Place the Table of Contents story in the appropriate place.
Do not thread the TOC story frame with other text frames, since any changes you make will replace your existing frames and any other frames threaded to it.
To update a TOC, open the document that contains it.
Do not edit the TOC story directly! Instead, edit the document that contains the titles, headings and other elements that appear in the TOC.
If you edit the story directly, you'll lose all of the updates you've made if you ever update the TOC using the Update Table of Contents menu command.
To change the formatting, edit the paragraph styles that control the entries' appearance.
Similarly, you may change the appearance of page numbers by editing the section numbering in the document or book.
Editing the TOC Style will also change the appearance of the TOC, and will enable you to add or delete paragraph styles as desired.
When you have finished modifying the TOC, choose Layout > Update Table of Contents.
Your table of contents will be updated to reflect the changes you have made.
