Instructions for Stringing Popcorn
- 1). Pop the entire bag of popcorn kernels with a hot air popper and leave the popped popcorn uncovered in large bowls for two days prior to stringing, so the pieces get hard and stale. Hot air popcorn poppers require no oil and leave popcorn dry and clean for decorative purposes.
- 2). Thread the needle with a 36 inch piece of thread. Double over the length of thread, so that you have a two-thread, 18-inch length, and tie the two loose ends together in a knot. If you're younger and smaller, work with a shorter, more manageable length of thread. Multiple strands can be tied together after they are strung. Consider that the color thread you choose will show through the finished strand ... off-white will be camouflaged, red, green, gold and silver will look festive and gray or black/orange will look strange!
- 3). Pierce the thickest part of each piece of popcorn with the needle and slide it all the way down the thread before "sewing" the next. Avoid the hard, brown hull.
- 4). Stop adding popcorn to the thread when there is about 3 inches left on the thread. Filling the thread too full will crush the popcorn when the garland is hung.
- 5). Cut the thread close to the needle to release it, and then knot the thread.
- 6). Tie together more than one strand to create a popcorn garland as long as you like.
