Vacation With a Mission

103 45
Have you ever considered taking a faith-based vacation? As a Christian, how might you use your vacation time to renew your faith?
  1. You might participate in a short-term missions trip
  2. You might schedule a week or two at a retreat center or a bible camp
  3. Your faith-based vacation may be as simple as making sure that you worship with another community of faith while you are away from home
Another possibility is to arrange a home exchange with another Christian.
Two households simply swap homes, during their vacation.
You can find numerous home exchange organizations online, by searching your Internet browser.
The faith-based home exchange is unique because you are seeking out people who share your faith.
A few online Christian home exchange organizations are available to help you.
These organizations focus exclusively on bringing Christians together.
Here are some benefits of a Christian home exchange:
  1. Your family enjoys an affordable vacation
  2. You enjoy peace of mind that comes with knowing that you share a common faith with your home exchange partner
  3. "The larger church" becomes real to other Christians in two local churches--yours and your exchange partner's
How does this kind of vacation renew one's faith? This will differ from person to person.
However, the key seems to be that one is intentional about planning a vacation with a mission.
You don't just plan a vacation; you look for a way to connect with other Christians or to engage in some kind of Christian service.
Anyone who belongs to a community of faith can take a faith-based approach when planning a vacation.
Of special note, however, is the pastor who is planning a sabbatical.
The clergy sabbatical is a specialized kind of vacation with a mission.
During the clergy sabbatical, the pastor is looking for more than just a vacation.
During the sabbatical, the clergy may want to take a break from any pastoral responsibilities; they may arrange for a home exchange to create an affordable sabbatical.
Sometimes, as when one is planning for an extended study leave of more than a few weeks, the clergy sabbatical may be structured as a home-and-ministry exchange.
In this arrangement, two clergy exchange limited pastoral duties as well as their homes.
This can work out very well, since this reduces the expense of the clergy sabbatical for the local church.
When the sabbatical is more affordable for the parish, it is easier for the parish to offer their pastor a sabbatical.
Clergy have been doing home-and-ministry exchanges for years, but not in great numbers.
The Internet is making this kind of home exchange increasingly popular.
As church members see the advantage of the home exchange for their pastors, they ask themselves whether or not they too might benefit from a faith-based vacation--and specifically from a faith-based home exchange.
Perhaps it is time to begin planning your vacation in the context of your faith.
Look around.
Do you see a possible "Vacation With A Mission" that excites you and is within your reach?
