How to Become a Construction Electrician
- 1). Graduate from an electrician training program. Many community colleges and technical schools across the United States offer training programs for people interested in becoming an electrician. These programs generally last 1 to 2 years and prepare students to become a "journeyman."
- 2). Serve as a journeyman. A journeyman is an electrical apprentice with some training or experience already in the field. Most electricians work as a journeyman for 2 to 3 years before they are given the opportunity to apply to become a master electrician. Work as a journeyman on a construction site if you plan to become a construction electrician.
- 3). Take the master electrician exam. Each state has its own board of electrical examiners. They administer the exam and oversee the approval for anyone wanting to become a master electrician.
- 4). Apply for your electrician license. After passing your test you can apply for a master electrician license in your state. You can also register as a construction electrician with your state and any subcontractor organizations in your area.
