Winter Must-Haves: The Vintage Edition

106 206
The weather outside is frightful! And this winter's must have wardrobe pieces are a mix of season specific staples, and holdovers from a spring fashion season that saw "70's sophistication" figure prominently. Some trends will send you running to contemporary brands for updated options (see: flares), but for many (see fur(ry) stoles), it's all about shopping vintage...YES!

1. Flares

Imported from the Spring 2011 runways, flares, or wide leg trousers and jeans are the epitome of 70's laid-back glamour. Available from contemporary brands like J Brand and Free People, this look runs the gamut from extreme and adorned, to simple 70's silhouette, a la Victoria Beckham, in her crisp dark denim flares, Jackie O. sunglasses, and luxe fur. You can go full on retro like Becks, or go for a more tailored approach, pairing them with sophisticated toggle coat, or a fitted blazer.More »

2. Winter Maxi Dress

Long, flowing dresses are not just for warm summer days and nights. Use jackets (like the classic motorcycle style pictured here), an oversized, chunky knit sweater, or a rich faux fur for night, to make your favorite maxi dresses cold weather-friendly. As vintage shops sell maxi dresses year round, they're not only your best option, but with just a bit of luck you may even score one of those long-sleeved dresses with big prints popular in the 70's.More »

3. Fur(ry) Stole

The battle rages as to whether or not it's ethical to wear fur. Eco-savvy designers like Stella McCartney and Rachel Zoe offer faux creations whose luxe factor rivals those of the most rare animal's coat. However, when it comes to fur, we may have found a loophole in vintage. That said, the look this winter is a fur(ry) stole (faux OR vintage) over your outerwear for everyday glamour like London-based designer, Alice Eva. Alternatively, drape it over a sparkly dress for a luxe 40's take on a controversial classic.More »

4. The Natty Sweater

On the runways, the trend is towards softer, more rounded silhouettes, which lends itself well to the oversized, the slouchy, and generally, the more comfy! Luckily, vintage shops are full of those comfy, colorful, natty sweaters that have somehow come right back in fashion. Pair a classic slouchy graphic sweater from the 80's with skinny jeans and knee high boots, or strike a more daringly haute pose in a big puffy-sleeved option.More »

5. Something Lace

Winter does not have to be all about hiding from the cold in thick fabrics. Especially at night. Lighten up with some lace under (or over!) those layers. Actress Rooney Mara went wedding day-glam in Givenchy Couture for the premiere of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We can follow her lead in delicate vintage versions from as far back as the 1920's.More »

6. Serious Sparkle

When they say 2012 will mark the end of the world or even just a new consciousness, fashion-wise that should simply mean we all get to sparkle more. Stella McCartney, Oscar De La Renta, Balmain--it's all about the glitz and glamour on the runways and red carpets this winter season. Most Vintage Personality (or, MVP around these parts) Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine) sparkles in this rose, fish tail Antonio Berardi creation at the VH1 Divas concert. Scour vintage shops to create this evening look with early 80's bedazzled disco butterfly tops and mini dresses.

7. One Great (Big) Coat

Patterned, fur-hooded, puffy, or cape-shaped, big cozy coats are all the way 'in' this winter season--the bigger the better. Don't be afraid to let your coat swallow you. Take it floor length or maxi-sleeved for extra drama.More »

8. Ethnic Accents

"Native" or more vaguely, "tribal", ethnic prints have crossed over to the cold side via coats and cardigans. They're positively yummy with basic separates (try flares here); even yummier with contrasting but complementary ethnic prints, like on Missoni's Spring 2012 runway. As a very important part of the bohemian chic vocabulary, ethnic prints never really go out of style among true vintage lovers. This means they're never absent from vintage shop racks. Reinterpret this persistent vintage trend in a great skirt, or even a furry boot.More »

9. Colored Pant

The new trouser has led the charge for putting color back into our daily wardrobes this Fall/Winter season, and laid the foundation for color-blocking, another 2011 fashion trend that seems to be going nowhere! With brights back on the map (or on our legs at least), why not remix the trend with patterned pants from the 70's, crisp cuts from the 80's, or bright graphics from the 90's?More »

10. Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits are another trend from spring 2011 that has followed us right into the Fall/Winter season. Easy, fun, and glamorous depending on the style, even Vogue anointed jumpsuits one of 6 major trends of the last year. Chances are your favorite vintage shops have curated a collection of the cutest jumpsuits from dressy to casual. Shop online right now for some of the most authentically retro options.More »

11. The Spring Dress

Your floaty spring dresses do not have to hibernate for the winter. Winterize those ethereal beauties with thick tights. On top, snuggle up in one of the season's oversized sweaters (see above). The mixture of textures, light and heavy, will add a sensual touch to your day-to-day style. For extra retro points, take the hemline midi-length.More »
