How to Train Young Children in the Tooth Brushing Habit

    • 1). Start oral hygiene training as soon as your child has a tooth. Wet a washcloth and wrap it over your finger or wet an infant-sized toothbrush if your child is at least one year old. Gently wipe or brush the front and back of the tooth two times each day. This will help your child get used to the sensation it causes in his mouth.

    • 2). Bring your toddler into the bathroom to observe you brushing your teeth. Then brush his teeth with a small toothbrush with extra-soft bristles. Next time, encourage your child to "brush" his own teeth while you brush yours. This will teach him how to put the toothbrush in his mouth. At this age children often only bite the toothbrush and continue to need adult assistance to get teeth clean.

    • 3). Introduce child-safe toothpaste when your child is 2 years of age. These toothpastes are low-fluoride, in case they are swallowed, and fruit-flavored. Have your child practice spitting out his toothpaste.

    • 4). Take preschool-age children to the store to pick out their own toothbrush. A special toothbrush will motivate your child to brush more often. Teach your child to hold the brush under running water and then move it around in his mouth. Brush his teeth for him when he is finished.

    • 5). Set a timer to teach your child to brush for two minutes. Use a sticker chart or other reward system to reinforce good tooth-brushing habits.
