New Findings Suggest Ginger Supplements Could Help Prevent Colon Cancer
Before and after the study samples from each participant were taken from the lining of their colons. These samples were then tested for chemicals called eicosanoids that are known to increase inflammation in the gut.
After the study the samples of those supplementing with ginger were found to have significantly reduced levels of these inflammatory markers. Therefore, researchers concluded that ginger supplements may help to reduce inflammation and prevent the formation of tumours in the colon.
Just under 40,000 men and women are diagnosed with bowel [otherwise known as colon] cancer in the UK every year. It is the third most common form of cancer and the second biggest cancer killer, more than either breast or prostate. Bowel cancer claims more than 16,000 lives each year in the UK. These samples were then tested for chemicals called eicosanoids that are known to increase inflammation in the gut.
It is important to note that research is still in the early stages and this was a small scale study. However, the initial indications are certainly positive and encouraging. More extensive research is already underway to validate these positive indicators.
Interestingly, countries such as India, China and Japan have a significantly lower incidence of colon cancer. In these areas ginger has always played a much larger role in their daily diet. Ginger is non-toxic and cost effective and can provide many other positive benefits when used as a supplement.
