Tint Styles for FCP

104 9

    Tint Effect

    • The Tint Effect puts a colored wash over the entire video clip. When this effect is at 100 percent, it looks like a colored gel has been placed over the image. You can adjust the amount of tint with the "Amount" slider or by entering a percentage into the text box. At 50 percent, the video has a distinct tint, but other colors are also allowed to show through. You can choose any color you wish by selecting it from the color picker or by entering its HSB, RGB, HSL, YUV or HTML color code. You can also use the eyedropper to pick a color from the video frame to use as your tint color.

    Sepia Effect

    • The Sepia Effect provides a shortcut for making the sepia tint. By adjusting the "Amount" slider, you can give your video clip anything from a strong brown hue to a faint tan discoloration, as on old photographs. The Sepia Effect can also act as a more advanced tint effect because it provides the option to change the tint color from sepia to any other hue, and also includes a "Highlight" slider, which the Tint Effect does not. This slider raises the white levels, which can prevent a tinted clip from looking muddy.

    Proc Amp

    • The Proc Amp is a digital simulation of an old analog control called the composite video processing amplifier. Composite video is made up of two chrominance, or color, signals and one luminance, or brightness, signal, all of which can be adjusted by the processing amplifier. Similarly, FCP's Proc Amp allow you to adjust the relative black, white and saturation levels as well as the color-balance. The black level control on this effect is called "Setup," the white level, "Video" and the saturation, "Chroma." A fourth control, the "Phase" dial, adjusts the hue, which tints the video. This is perhaps the most flexible of all the tinting control in FCP.

    Color Balance

    • The Color Balance effect is often used to get rid of unwanted hues, but it can also be used to add them. This control allows you to adjust the red, green and blue levels individually. It also allows you to apply the effect to only the highlights, midtones or shadowed areas, or to create different effects on all three. This is the only one of the tinting tools that allows you to apply an effect to each of these areas individually.

    Desaturate

    • The Desaturate Effect reduces the amount of color in a clip by a specified percentage. When this effect is set to 100 percent, the clip is entirely grayscale. Lower levels reduce the color saturation, but do not remove it altogether. Desaturation is the equivalent of adding a black tint to your clip, and is useful for simulating the look of black-and-white film or old video.
