There are many worse illnesses that you can contract than constipation. Even so, constipation is certainly one of the more prevalent ones. It affects millions of sufferers each year and it is so easy to prevent.

An excellent method of preventing constipation is to drinking plenty of liquids. But not all liquids are equal. Some liquids can actually increase the chances that you will become constipated because they will dehydrate you.

As an example, a liquid like alcohol, caffeinated coffees or teas, caffeinated colas, and just about any drink with caffeine as a significant ingredient, will make your body more susceptible to dehydration. And this is the reverse effect of what you are looking for. In most cases, however, the more you drink the better your digestive system will work - and the best drink is water. The caveat, however, is that you have to be eating enough insoluble fiber. Otherwise, the water will have nothing to help them bind the stools with.

A lot of people believe that the optimum number of times to have a bowel movement in a day is three times a day. One after each meal. And, for some people, that is true. But people are different.

Most individuals, it seems, have a movement in the morning, either before or after breakfast and another one after they have eaten dinner or before they go to bed. The important thing, however, is to get in tune with your body and let it tell you when you need to go. If you feel the urge to go, then you should go. Ignoring the urge too often may eventually lead to a situation where you no longer feel the urge to have a bowel movement. If this happens you may feel yourself waiting longer and longer between toilet visits until you are experiencing chronic constipation.

Through the years, health experts have promoted many well known and natural ways to stave off constipation symptoms. You can start by drinking plenty of water. Don't let yourself become dehydrated. If you are not eating fiber, change your diet so that you are eating at least 25 to 35 grams of fiber today.

Exercise is important as well. There have been tons of studies over the years showing that those in sedentary occupations or who are sedentary in nature are much more likely to experience constipation symptoms than are those who exercise on a regular basis. And try to have regular bowel movements. This means not getting into the habit of 'holding it in'.

Everyone is susceptible to constipation at some point in their lives. It is inevitable. After all, the digestive system is a complex system so its no surprise that if not treated exactly right that problems would occur with it. The best thing that you can do is to modify your eating habits to lessen the chance that constipation will adversely affect you.
