104 11
    • 1). Restart your Web browser. Because Java for Windows Vista is utilized by your web browser, you'll need to restart your browser after installation for the program to take effect. If you install Java then fail to restart your browser, you won't actually be able to see any Java content on the Internet until that restart occurs.

    • 2). Restart your computer. If restarting your browser doesn't correct the issues you're having, try restarting your computer. Oftentimes the Windows Vista operating system needs to be completely rebooted for a newly installed program to work properly--Java is certainly no exception to this rule.

    • 3). Make sure the version of Java you're downloading will actually work on Windows Vista. There are versions of Java available on Java's website for many different operating systems, including older versions of Windows and the Linux operating system. Check to make sure you've downloaded the appropriate Windows Vista install file and if you've being trying to install the wrong version, download the correct version from Java's site.

    • 4). Log in as your computer's system administrator. Sometimes if multiple user accounts are set up in Windows Vista, the sub-accounts won't be able to install new software. Only the administrator account will have the authority to add programs to your computer's hard drive. Log out of whichever account you're logged into and then log back in as your Windows Vista administrator and try your Java installation again.
