Specialty Brewed Beers
Budweiser, Miller, and Corona are all well-known brands of beers. Their lines of beers include light beers and flavored beers. So why take a chance on beers with strange names and from unfamiliar brewers? To experience new tastes and to add variety when you are out drinking beer.
What makes specialty beers special? Anything goes with specialty beers. They are often brewed by microbrewers. They may have unusual ingredients or are brewed differently than regular beers to give them their unique flavors and tastes. Here are some types of specialty beers:
Weizenbier (Weissbier)-this type of specialty beer is made from wheat. Weizenbier is a refreshing, effervescent golden beer that is cloudy and may cast a whitish appearance. This ale has hints of cloves and banana. If a little yeast is added when bottling, the Weizenbier is referred to as a Hefeweizen. To be considered a Hefeweizen, the Weizenbier must have at least 50% wheat malt. It may be served with a lemon twist.
Smoked Beer-a very unique beer is the smoked beer. This style is very popular in Bamberg Germany. With this style of beer, the malt is fired over a wood fire and the smoke is absorbed into the grains giving the beer a smoky characteristic.
Fruit/Vegetable Beer-in Belgium it is nothing new to add fruit or vegetables to beer. In America, adding fruit or vegetables is relatively new to American brewers. Fruit extracts or syrups are added to beer brewing to create a variety of unique flavors of beer.
Herb/Spice Beer-beers brewed with herbs or spices is another new concept to American brewers. With the amount of spices available, there are a myriad of recipes to satisfy any urge. Imagination is the only limit to the varieties of beer that can be created with herbs and spices
Chocolate, coffee, oatmeal, juice, candies, or any other edible items can be added to adding beer brewing to create innovative specialty beers.
