How to Check for Criminal Record in North Carolina

104 27
    • 1). Contact the Clerk of Superior Court's office in any and all North Carolina counties where you want to do a background check. Fill out a form and pay a $25 fee to get a certified copy of someone's criminal record. If certification isn't necessary, use public access terminals at the offices to search without charge. The nccourts.org/County/Default.asp web page links to all the county trial courts.

    • 2). Check the prison records. The North Carolina Department of Corrections will let you search online at www.doc.state.nc.us/OFFENDERS for public information on inmates, probationers or parolees since 1972. Search by entering a name, age, gender or race, or even use a "sounds like" feature for names if you're not exactly sure.

    • 3). Search the sex offender registry. The state is required to keep track of sex offenders and their addresses, and the information is available at the website, sexoffender.ncdoj.gov. Search by putting in a name, age or status (registered, failed to register, out of state).
