How to Plant Tomatoes in a Hanging Pot
- 1). Purchase a hanging pot large enough to grow tomatoes from a local nursery along with the tomato seedling.
- 2). Fill the hanging pot with "fresh sphagnum-peat- or compost-based potting mix, which helps to keep plants disease and pest free," according to Martha Stewart's website. Place the seedling into the pot at the same depth it was in its nursery container.
- 3). Water daily or every other day as needed. Plants confined to containers need moist soil. Water during the mid-summer daily.
- 4). Fertilize the day of planting with a 10-10-10 fertilizer containing nitrogen. Afterwards, fertilize every three weeks for a total of two times, according to the University of Illinois Extension.
- 5). Prune suckers to prevent leaf growth so the plant can focus on producing tomatoes.
