Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Vacuum your pool with a pool vacuum. Skim any debris from the top of the water with a skimming net.
2

Backwash the pool filter completely. Follow the instructions provided by the pool filter manufacturer.
3

Blow any excess water out of the multiport on the filter, using a shop vacuum or an air compressor.
4

Drain any remaining water from the pool filter and pump. Then unhook the filter and pump from the pool.
5

Drain the water from the pool heater (if applicable). Excess water can be removed from the tubes by using a shop vacuum or air compressor.
6

Remove the skimmer basket and the return-jet fittings.
7

Blow the remaining water from the jet return and pipes. Once air bubbles begin to form in the pool, the pipes are empty.
8

Place a plug into the jet return and pipe fittings to keep water from filling back up.
9

Put an empty 20-oz. soda bottle with a cap into the skimmer basket. This will keep the basket from getting damaged by ice expansion.
10

Empty the main drain line of your pool. Blow air into the line until bubbles come out of the drain. Once the drain is clear of water, place a plug in the outside end.
11

Cover the openings of all tubes with duct tape to keep rodents or other pests out of the pipes in the winter months.
12

Remove all accessories from the pool. This includes ladders, diving boards and ropes. Store them in a garage or shed for the winter.
13

Empty water from the pool. In a tile pool, drain the water to just below the tile line. For other pools, drain the water to just below the skimmer line.
14

Test the chemical levels in the water and add appropriate amounts to bring the pool water into correct balance.
15

Place a pool cover over the water.
