    • 1). Choose a housing container for your worms. You could use an old sandbox or a large plastic tub. You could even use a large fish tank if you have one.

    • 2). Shred typing paper or newspaper and place it in the bottom of your housing container.

    • 3). Cover the shredded paper with soil, followed by 1 to 2 lb. of horse manure, depending on the size of your container. The Earthworm Works website recommends adding the manure because it contains active microbes.

    • 4). Mix the paper, soil and manure together with a shovel. If your housing container is on the smaller side, you can use your hands to mix the ingredients together.

    • 5). Water your garden worm soil until it is completely moist, using a garden hose.

    • 6). Place your garden worm housing container is in the sun, and leave it alone for 48 hours. This gives the soil time to heat up. Worms cannot stand soil temperatures under 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 7). Add 2 lb. of worms to your housing container. Redworms are a good choice because they reproduce quickly.

    • 8). Feed your worms once each day. This means taking your kitchen scraps and mixing them in with the top part of your soil. It also means checking the soil to make sure it is not drying out. Worms need moist soil to thrive.
