How to File an Extension for Kentucky State Taxes
- 1). Estimate whether you will owe income taxes or whether you will receive a refund. If you expect to owe income taxes, you will have to make a payment by the standard filing deadline to avoid interest and tax penalties for failing to pay on time.
- 2). File Kentucky form 40A102 to request a Kentucky income tax filing extension unless you have filed a federal income tax extension and do not expect to owe any Kentucky state taxes. Everyone filing form 40A102 must complete the personal information portion. If you have filed a federal income tax extension and are just making a payment, complete only section 2. If you only need to request an extension but do not need to make a payment, fill out section 1. If you need to do both, fill out the entire form.
- 3). Mail your form 40A102 to Kentucky Revenue Cabinet, PO Box 1190, Frankfort, KY 40602-1190 before April 15. This will give you until October 15 to file your taxes.
