How to Stop Ceiling Fans From Clicking

    • 1). Turn the ceiling fan on and set it to the fastest setting. Watch the fan until you hear it clicking. Pay close attention to determine if the pull chains or any moving parts are hitting another part.

    • 2). Hold the pull chains still while the fan is in motion. If the clicking stops, the chains are the problem. Adjust the chains by taking off or adding a weighted pull to the end of each.

    • 3). Examine the light fixture while the ceiling fan is in motion. If the lights are moving erratically, tighten the thumbscrews on each lampshade. Turn the fan to its highest setting. If the noise came from the light fixture, this should stop the noise.

If the Problem Wasn't the Light Fixture or Pullchains

    • 1). Tighten all the screws that attach the blades to the motor shaft, using the Phillips screwdriver. Turn the ceiling fan on to see if the clicking stops.

    • 2). Measure the distance between each blade tip (at the highest point) and the ceiling. If one of the measurements is significantly different than the others, bend the blade slightly to adjust. If the fan still clicks after repeating this step several times, add a balance.

    • 3). Place a balance from the balance kit on one of the blades. If this dosn't help, repeat on another blade until the clicking diminishes.

    • 4). Place the balance on other parts of the fan blade until the clicking is quieter (or completely gone). Duct-tape pennies to the top of the blade, as needed, in place of the balance.
