How to Write Heartfelt Sympathy Cards

    • 1). Keep your message short and to the point. Do not feel obligated to write a lengthy message. Simple messages such as, "I am sorry for your loss," or "With deepest sympathy," are acceptable. People understand that it's hard to know what to write, and it's the thought that is important.

    • 2). Handwriting the note is a more personal gesture than something printed out on a computer or worse, emailed. Many recipients choose to keep the cards to read later, when they need additional comfort. Use your best handwriting and compose the message in dark ink.

    • 3). Include personal statements if you were close to the deceased. Indicating how much you will miss them and how much they meant to you is appropriate. Generally steer clear of long anecdotes in the sympathy card, however; this is material better saved for a face-to-face meeting, a wake or a detailed letter to be sent at a later date. But feel free to describe briefly how the deceased inspired or helped you, or what traits she had that you admired.

    • 4). Avoid overly-dramatic or clichéd statements, and stay away from statements that attempt to make everything better. It is best to let the bereaved grieve, and to simply offer your support and condolences, rather than telling them things will improve. They're not ready for such sentiments.

    • 5). Send sympathy cards to the home of the bereaved any time, even up to a year after someone has passed away. Families grieve for a long time, and hearing that someone is still thinking of them and their loss can be comforting, even months later.
