This article was written to teach you one thing: how to repair wood floors.
Based on my past experiences, I found out that hardwood floors begin showing their ages after about 5-6 years.
The varnish loses its shine and the hardwood floor is getting darker and uglier.
There is a perfect solution for wood floor scratch repair now on the market that works for all types of wood colors, stains and grains.
It's a spray that once applied makes miracles to your wood furniture and the scratches miraculously disappear.
You will find the link to it down the page.
Now time has come to do something about our floor.
Before you start, you should know these:
  • The minimum order is about 20 square feet for prefinished floors (for replacement purposes)
  • You can rent a floor sander
  • Floor refinishing is messy
  • You're going to need sandpaper of different types (20, 40 and 100 grit paper)
  • You'll need a masks and glasses for dust (there will be a lot of dust)
First have a general look over the floor and try to spot the places that need replacement.
Usually these are floor boards that are warped, cracked, or severely damaged.
When you match the new ones, do not worry about matching them perfectly with the old ones.
This step will be taken care of by floor sander.
Thinner boards will require professional hands.
I would recommend leaving nothing in the room that you work.
Furniture must be removed because you need space and don't want your furniture to get scratched.
Draperies must be removed also or they will get dusted.
Now you can mark up places on the floor you think that will need extra care with a pencil and begin the rest of the operation.
You'll have to insist on spots where you replaced the old boards, because naturally the new ones are ticker.
The next step is to rent a floor sander because obviously you will not going to buy one for your home.
You will find a floor sander manual quite in handy especially if this is your "first time".
So be sure you get one when you rent the floor sander.
As for the accessories I would definitely insist for you to get a dust bag with your sander.
This way the tool will produce less dust in your entire home.
When I start the actual repair wood floor job, I always make sure that the sander does NOT touch the floor when you switch it on every time you do this.
This is very important to protect your floor but also the sander motor.
Only when the sander reaches the full speed you are allowed to begin sanding.
In the beginning it will seem like fun.
Don't let yourself fouled and keep a constant pressure on the floor.
In the end you'll be surprised about some people doing this everyday for a living.
Next step is a very important step for the quality of your work.
The entire room should be vacuumed of sanding dust.
Insist on this step to remove any remaining dust.
After that apply varnish or stain to the floor (refer to a floor varnishing article if you need one).
The first coat will dry fast (because of the dried wood) and the second coat will take about an hour to dry.
Be ready to apply 3 or 4 coats (total) until you're satisfied with the results, over a period of 24-36 hours.
The final step in repair wood floors job is your satisfaction with the work you did.
If you're satisfied, your hardwood floor should look shinny and new.
Good job!
