Georgia Senate approves immigration bill
GEORGIA - The Georgia Senate has just approved an Arizona-style bill that is similar to one that passed in a state House committee, with minor adaptations.
The Senate bill removed the provision that would have required private companies with over four employees to use a federal database to verify the immigration status of new hires.
With a 39-17 vote, the bill passed after nearly three hours of deliberation. It still includes the incentives for employees to use the verification system, arguing that they can't exempt the wages of employees on their state income tax returns if they don't.
According to Rep. Matt Ramsey, a Republican who authored the House bill, the E-Verify system provision was the most important one of all.
Coincidently, the bill was passed the same day that a federal appeals court blocked critical elements of the Arizona SB1070 law.
The only thing standing in the way of the bill is a full House vote. Provisions that remain in the bill include the requirement that law enforcement officials verify the immigration status of those they stop due to routine traffic violations as well as the provision that penalizes those who transport or harbor illegal immigrants.
Similar provisions in the Arizona bill were blocked last year when a federal judge argued that they violated the U.S. Constitution because the enforcement of immigration law is a federal matter.
