How to Find Oil Leaks on a Toyota
- 1). Pop the hood and prop it open.
- 2). Open the oil cap on the valve cover and place UV (ultraviolet) dye in the oil crankcase. The dye is available at most auto parts retailers and will be packaged in a small container.
- 3). Run the engine for at least five minutes to allow the dye to circulate through the engine. If you have more time, drive the vehicle around the block a few times to ensure that the dye gets to all parts of the engine.
- 4). Jack up the Toyota and place it on jack stands. Keep the vehicle running.
- 5). Put the UV glasses on and crawl under the car, beneath the engine.
- 6). Use a UV flashlight and aim it at any potential areas for an oil leak until you locate where the leak is. The source of the leak will be easily discernible because of the dye that you placed in the oil; the source of the leak will be bright yellow. You can wipe the area down and check again to make sure that is the source of the leak.
