How to Retile Your Countertop
- 1). Remove the existing tiles from the countertop, using your hammer and chisel to take them up. Go over the underlayment with a razor scraper to get it flat, smooth and free of any mortar.
- 2). Measure the countertop to find the middle. Use your level and pencil to make a line across the middle, from front to back.
- 3). Spread thinset mortar over the front edge of the countertop, using your notched trowel. Press your trim tiles in place, starting at the center line. Cut the tiles at the ends as needed on your tile cutter.
- 4). Spread thinset mortar over the top of the countertop. Set bullnose tiles along the front edge, starting at the center line, so they cover the sides of the front-edge tiles.
- 5). Install the rest of your tiles behind the front line of bullnose tiles, using the center line as a guide and working your way out to the sides. Cut the end tiles as needed. Let the tiles set for a day.
- 6). Apply grout the countertop by pressing grout over the tiles with a grout float, forcing it into the spaces. Use a sponge to wipe up the excess.
