    • 1). Decide whether you would like to visit your local Social Security office or call the SSA to cancel your direct deposit and request a manual check.

    • 2). Use this number to call the SSA, if that's what you have decided: 800-772-1213. For TTY, call 800-325-0778. Have your personal information ready.

    • 3). Find the nearest Social Security office, if you have decided to visit your local branch. Locate your nearest SSA office by using the Local Office Search function on the SSA website. Enter your zip code on the locator page and hit "Locate" to get the address of your nearest office. Bring identification to the office.

    • 4). Tell the agent either at the office or on the phone that you would like to cancel your Social Security direct deposit and start receiving a check in the mail. If you wish, you may refer to the note on the Direct Deposit Sign-up Form, which indicates you can cancel direct deposit by giving notice to the Social Security administration. Tell the agent the address to which you would like to have your check mailed.

    • 5). Ask the agent how quickly the change will take effect. Monitor your bank account to make sure no Social Security deposits are made until you receive your first check in the mail, to ensure the cancellation has taken effect.
