Lug Nut Types

Knowing the type of lug nut used for a set of wheels can be important when replacing parts or performing repairs. Each type of lug nut has its own type of seat, which is the area on the wheel where the nut will be secured. Mismatching a lug nut and seat will result in a poor fit and possibly the loss of the wheel. - Conical seat lug nuts, also called acorn lug nuts, are the most commonly used style. They typically have a 60 degree taper, and come in two hex sizes -- a 13/16-inch hex and a 3/4-inch hex which has a distinct bulge at the base. Because of this difference, it's important to use the correct lug wrench when changing wheels.
- Mag shank lug nuts come in several lengths, each of which are appropriate for different applications. This type of lug nut uses a washer to protect the face of the wheel, which may be built into the lug nut or separate.
- Ball seat lug nuts are typical for Honda and Acura vehicles. Ball seat lug nuts have a domed taper, as opposed to the straight angle of an acorn lug nut's taper. They are sometimes called spherical lug nuts.
