How to Take Care of a Hydrangea Arrangement

    • 1). Bring your gardening shears and a bucket of cool water to your garden. If you have hydrangea in your landscaping, take advantage of the glorious blossoms to brighten your indoor spaces. The best time to cut your flowers is in the early part of the morning. Cutting the plant prior to the sun rising allows some of the moisture to evaporate. Cut the stem on a diagonal and immediately place in your bucket of cool water. Allow the stems to soak for one to two hours before using in your floral arrangement.

    • 2). Unpack the box or wrap in which the hydrangea blooms came to you. If you've received the flowers from a florist, you'll need to unpack each stem and cut approximately 1/4 inch off the stem, cutting each stem on a diagonal under running water. This will remove any air bubbles and help the water be used most efficiently by each hydrangea stem.

    • 3). Use a floral preservative or flower food. This will help to nourish your flowers, maintain a steady pH balance in the water and extend the life of your arrangement by more than one week. Local nurseries and online vendors sell a variety of products that will work.

    • 4). Keep your vase in a cool location out of any drafts or direct sunlight. This will prevent your hydrangea blossoms from drying out. Lengthen the duration of your arrangement by changing the water and freshly cutting the stems every two to three days.
