A syphilis treatment is considered successful if you lower the titer in your blood serum to a safe level. Once you have been screened for treatment and begin a regimen, the titer should be four times lower in the three or four months following treatment, and eight times lower in the sixth or eighth month. For those treated for early syphilis, the titer will decrease to zero after the first year.

    Azithromycin vs. Penicillin

    • According to the New England Journal of Medicine, a recent study in Tanzania shows that a single 2 gram dose of azithromycin cured syphilis with a 97.7 percent success rate, while penicillin G benzathine produced a 95 percent success rate. The advantage of azithromycin is that you can take it orally, while penicillin is given by injection.

Doxycycline is a member of the tetracycline antibiotics group. It can be used to treat syphilis and is a good alternative for you if you are allergic to penicillin. You may consider a two-week treatment with doxycycline twice daily. It is also an effective treatment for chlamydia trachomatis. It should be taken with a glass of water, and you should remain upright for at least 30 minutes to avoid irritation to the stomach and esophagus.
