Black Hair Weaving for Children
- Very young children shouldn't wear hair weaves. Young children are still developing and this includes their hairline. If heavy extensions are placed around a delicate hairline, they can pull this hair out and leave lasting damage. Once children are past the age of eight or so, you can consider hair weaves if, and only if, the hairline is well-developed and strong.
- When thinking about weave hairstyles, remember that most kids are very active and don't place hair care at the top of their concerns. Children are going to play, run, jump, engage in sports and other activities that will get their hair dirty. Intricate styles will only get messed up.
Choose easy individual braid styles that can be left to hang loose or pulled into a ponytail. You can also two-strand twist extensions for a different look and one that's fuller than braids.
If you want loose weave hair for children, keep it shorter than mid-back length. Shoulder-length is probably best for making sure the hair stays manageable and tangle-free.
Even though weave hair allows for less hair maintenance, it still needs to be cared for. This includes regular shampooing and conditioning of the underlying scalp. - For braided weave styles, synthetic hair is a good, inexpensive option. It will last for several weeks and can be washed along with the child's hair and scalp.
Human hair is more expensive and while it can be heat styled (where synthetic hair cannot), it's not the most practical option for young children. - When adding hair weaves, it's best to use the sew-in method, where the natural hair is braided to the scalp and extensions are added to the braids.
Bonding is not recommended. Not only are bonded (or glue-in) extensions meant to be temporary (no more than one week), they are very difficult to remove without damage to the natural hair. - When adding hair weaves, avoid too-tight braiding, particularly around the hairline. This can lead to breakage, which may or may not be permanent.
Also, avoid adding too much hair. Not only will it be heavy for a child to carry, it's harder to maintain and keep tangle-free on a daily basis.
