Earning Your Bachelor's Degree & Becoming a Social Worker

    Types

    • Before beginning a college social work program, decide what area of social work you are interested in. The Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that their are three primary types of social workers: mental health and drug abuse social workers, health and medical social workers and school, family and child social workers.

    Requirements

    • Social workers must complete a bachelor's degree in social work (BSW) or a related field such as sociology or psychology. Coursework typically includes classes in sociology, psychology, ethics and economics. Some social work positions require the completion of a master's degree in social work as well (MSW). The college program must be accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

    Certification

    • Certification is required in order to work as a social worker. Certification requirements vary by state. It may be helpful to obtain national certification from the National Association of Social Workers. Prior to receiving certification, clinical social workers typically have to complete a two-year supervised clinical experience.

    Considerations

    • In addition to a bachelor's degree and certification, social workers need to possess certain personality characteristics such as objectivity, sensitivity and maturity. Also, social workers need to be able work well with their coworkers and clients. They must be responsible and well organized.

    Benefits

    • Social workers who work for state agencies will be eligible for state retirement plans and other benefits such as health insurance. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for a social worker in 2010 was about $45,500.
