Remote Control Fun and Holiday Crowds

103 7
Outpost Campground near Salt Lick, Kentucky doesn't have a pond or lake.
The opportunity to run remote control boats doesn't present itself here.
All the roads around the campsites are gravel, and not smooth enough for our low-slung RC racing cars.
What Outpost does have is plenty of open space, more than enough sly for flying radio control helicopters and airplanes.
A few trees grow around the facility, but not thick enough to interfere with our flying fun.
Large grassy areas provide for take-off and landing.
The surface is a bit bumpy.
No smooth experience, but an excellent training ground for improving pilot skills.
With all this open space we could stage airplane races or create some aerobatic stunt displays.
The campground was too crowded Memorial Day Weekend for any flying activities though.
With all the kids I don't think it was safe, and what fun is plane racing without a bunch of people to watch and enjoy it.
Now the weekend is over, and the crowd is gone.
Only a few full-time residents remain, and me.
I'm here for the week.
The gravel roads are perfect for giving me plenty of fun time with the monster trucks.
Now that the holiday campers moved out I have those roads all to myself.
No golf carts and bicycles to dodge.
I wouldn't run the RC trucks while the little ones rode their bikes.
They represented a hazard not only to the remote control vehicle, but also to themselves, because they didn't bother paying attention to anything in their path.
On more than one occasion I watched near collisions between bicycles and golf carts.
I felt like my trucks didn't have a chance in all that traffic.
There's nothing to stop my remote control fun now.
Controlling those golf carts that are moving around are adults, and a few older kids who are more attentive to where they're going.
They leave plenty of room for my truck to run the just over a mile of road, and even more off-road terrain.
And as an added bonus I get my exercise walking along with it.
