3 Tips For Using a Dog Barking Collar

103 41
Dogs bark for many reasons including just for fun, or so it seems.
But listening to constant dog noise fast becomes less that pleasant for humans in the area.
One tool for stopping the noise is the right dog barking collar.
Here are 3 tips for using the collar.
1.
Use it to link a negative with positives.
See, the anti bark collar really becomes a tool for training for desired behavior.
There's nothing wrong with dogs barking.
That's just what dogs do.
It's the wild uncontrolled noise that must stop.
A collar can be used to teach by making clear that there is a negative result associated with too much barking.
It's not punishment and it should not be a way to get even.
It is one way to discourage undesired behavior and lead to desired actions, more quiet and less noise.
2.
Don't just leave it on.
After the idea gets through to your pet, the collar can either be turned off or removed.
Now that's where your close involvement helps.
Leaving the unit off lets your dog learn to be quiet without the collar.
It takes time to train and communicate what you want.
We all forget sometimes and that may happen with your dog too.
But with time the excessive barking can probably be stopped even without the collar.
That way the collar is used as a training device.
3.
Pick the collar that does the job.
Training collars use electrical shock, ultrasonic blasts or spray.
Each type has fans and sometimes one will work for one dog and not for another.
Our experience with a citronella spray collar has been perfect.
Dogs dislike the smell of the oil apparently and also the shock of having a sudden cloud of oil mist around the head.
With the spray collar, our dog almost instantly linked that stinky spray with the barking and got very quiet.
Over months we gradually left the collar on less and less often.
Now very seldom does she wear it, and even then mostly now she barks only when it makes sense to bark.
Now very little barking happens just for fun.
Use a dog barking collar as a tool to link negative actions with the loud barking you personally do not want.
Many dogs quickly learn to stop barking to avoid the shock, sound or spray.
Our experiences with a MultiVet citronella spray collar make us think it is a fine option.
