Foods and Drink Not to Eat Before Sleep

"Drinking milk before sleep may not be that helpful. People are aware that milk is rich in tryptophan but are not aware that other amino acids in milk may prevent tryptophan from accessing the brain.  Also you need a great deal of milk to have any impact on sleep.  Milk contains about 50 mg of tryptophan per glass.  In chronic insomnia people may require 2000 mg or more of tryptophan.  That would require rapidly drinking 40 glasses of milk to ingest 2000 mg of tryptophan!"

Drinking milk before sleep may not be that helpful. That would require rapidly drinking 40 glasses of milk to ingest 2000 mg of tryptophan!

Suppose for a moment that you were desperate enough to gulp down 40 glasses of milk.  Imagine your disappointment to be told that your blood levels of tryptophan increased but your brain levels actually decreased. If tryptophan does not get to the brain it is not able to set the sleep process in motion and will not become natural melatonin.  The culprit is the transport sites that shunt tryptophan and other amino acids into the brain.  If you eat enough high protein food to increase blood tryptophan levels you also increase the amount of competing amino acids for those transport sites which will prevent tryptophan from entering the brain.  Since amino acids are always bundled together with other amino acids, these other competing amino acids will find their way into the brain and increase their levels at the expense of tryptophan.

Dr Hudson and his research group developed a drink mix known as Zenbev® (www.zenbev.com) which supplies a delicious and healthy source of natural tryptophan derived from organic pumpkin seeds.  The pumpkin seeds are grown on a small farm in Wisconsin where the soil and environment are perfect for a high tryptophan in these seeds.  The seeds are hand-harvested and then slowly pressed to remove the unnecessary oil. The proprietary blend of ingredients in Zenbev® drink mix allows tryptophan to readily access the brain.  No more drinking 40 glasses of milk just one hot cup of Zenbev® drink mix will do the trick.
