How to Grow Carob Trees
- 1). Soak the carob seeds in warm to hot water. If using warm water, the seeds should be soaked for about 24 hours. If using hot water, soak the seeds for at least four hours in a temperature of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure the seeds are swollen; if they are not, repeat the above process until seeds have swollen.
- 2). Keep the swollen seeds in sand for six to eight weeks. When the seeds begin to germinate or sprout and are about 3 inches long, they are ready to be moved into a deep pot. Consider growing the seedlings in a greenhouse for the first winter, if possible.
- 3). Plant the seedlings about 30 feet apart. Select a spot that has plenty of access to sunlight. The tree grows best in soil rich in calcium with good drainage.
- 4). Protect the seedling and young tree from animals and frost to promote growth. Watering the tree frequently during the first few years will also help its growth.
