Work Abroad In Mallorca - Summer in the Sun

103 28
Put simply, the weather is great, the beaches are beautiful, and the tourist industry is massive.
Mallorca caters for a different market than its Balearic sister Ibiza, but all the same, if it's a summer of sun and hospitality work you're after, then Mallorca could be the place for you.
Finding jobs and work in Mallorca will have the same challenges to overcome so it's best to be fully prepared before you leave home.
Mallorca's main airport is just outside Palma.
The easiest way to get into the city is by bus, which leaves every half hour.
Because it is such a big European tourist destination, it is easy to find a flight to Mallorca from the UK or in fact anywhere else.
Alternatively, you can make your way by ferry from Barcelona or Valencia.
Consider working in Porta Pollensa in the North East of the island for a more relaxing, family orientated summer job.
There are many apartment blocks which are holiday accommodation for families, and therefore may offer the opportunity for a job in the resort.
Also, the larger hotels offer entertainers every night for their guests, another potential opportunity to show off your talents.
Best known to Brits are the resorts of Magaluf and Palma Nova, where the focus is beer, beach and bikinis.
To stick a season in Magaluf your idea of fun should involve foam parties, gallon jugs of vodka Redbull and hordes of lads in baggy shirts and too much hair gel roaming the streets.
Palma Nova is slightly quieter, while the resorts on the north part of the island like Alcudia are much more family orientated.
Palma de Mallorca, the capital of Mallorca is also very developed for the northern European tourist market, ie Irish and English pubs are a common sight) but the city still retains its Balearic spirit, and is a great place to wander in the evening.
Top things to do in Mallorca, apart from wet t-shirt contests and foam parties are:
  • Visit the Cap de Formentor, a rocky peninsular on the northeastern tip of Mallorca.
There are stunning views, plunging cliffs and some unspoilt beaches.
  • Go to the Coves D'Arta, a network of caverns with high chambers and spectacular stalagtites and stalagmites.
  • Take a trip to Deia, the picturesque village that is the antithesis of Magaluf.
It's arty, wealthy and bohemian, with artists' workshops and studios lining the streets.
Made famous by British poet Robert Graves, who first lived there in 1932.
  • Take a couple of hours to walk to the Castell D'Alaro, 800 metres above sea level with spectacular views.
The walk begins from the village of Alaro.
  • Valldemossa is a village made famous by another foreigner - Chopin stayed there with his lover George Sands.
You can now visit the monastery in the village where Chopin stayed.
Pick up maps from the tourist info office at the airport, or alternatively at Avenida Magaluf 22, in Magaluf, and Plaza de la Reina 2, in Palma.
Like many of Europe's biggest tourist resort destinations, Mallorca has plenty of hotels - enough in fact to house the millions of tourists who arrive on the island each year.
In the summer most hotel rooms will have been booked by the tour operators who send out customers on package holidays, if you are looking for hostel accommodation, then forget about the hotel complexes of Magaluf and Palma Nova the capital, Palma, is where you'll find budget accommodation.
