Quick Ways to Prepare Pigs in a Blanket
- Pigs in a blanket, which involve some kind of sausage wrapped in bread, is a quick and easy dish that is great for hors d'oeuvres, snacks or kids' meals. There are several different ways to prepare pigs in a blanket, depending on the size of the sausage and the stuffing inside the "blanket."
- Wrap small sausages (cocktail weiners, for example) in premade crescent roll or biscuit dough, generally available in the dairy section of most grocery stores. You may have to cut the dough into small pieces so it wraps only once around each sausage. Cook according to the instructions on the dough package.
- Before you wrap the sausages in the dough, add extra ingredients such as cheddar cheese, cream cheese, hot sauce, peppers, green onions, mustard or even pickles to make your pigs in a blanket more interesting. Cook at 375 degrees for 11 to 13 minutes.
- Use full size hot dogs or precooked dinner sausages. Stretch the dough a little before you roll it so it covers most of the sausage. These larger pigs in blankets can also be stuffed with your favorite ingredients. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes or until the dough is browned. This recipe works well as a meal, especially for kids.
- Use soy hot dogs or vegetarian sausage instead of meat. If you want to make smaller pigs in a blanket, cut the vegetarian hot dogs or sausages in halves or thirds. Add extra ingredients if you want and cook at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes.
